House of the Dragon had an excellent first season. Some have gone so far as to say House of the Dragon deserves Emmys next year. Many of the performances were praised, including that of Paddy Considine’s turn as King Viserys, Matt Smith’s Daemon, Emma D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra, and far more. The show is poised to also launch or further the careers of quite a few young actors who were standouts in their portrayals, including Milly Alcock, who portrayed a young Rhaenyra, Emily Carey, who played a young Alicent, and Ewan Mitchell, who portrayed a teenage Aemond Targaryen.

When appearing on Josh Horowitz’ Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Horowitz asked Cavill about the rumors and speculation that he was headed to Westeros. “I mean, to be fair, when I was watching House of the Dragon I was like, uh, I feel like a lot of these guys can make a really good Witcher,” Cavill said. When asked if The Witcher had “scratched that itch” - referring to starring in a fantasy series - Cavill responded, “I mean, I think it’d be cool to be in Westeros. I really do. I don’t think it’s… I don’t think there’s a place for me in there, though.” Horowitz joked that Cavill did not deny being in Loki, to which Cavill said plainly, “I am not going to be in Loki.”

Ironically, Cavill has been a popular fan cast for Aegon the Conqueror. While that period has not yet been covered in House of the Dragon, it’s an important event in Targaryen history that could eventually happen in the anthology format of the show. Aegon and his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya conquered Westeros and set up a dynasty that would rule the Seven Kingdoms for almost three hundred years. Cavill’s name has also been thrown out as a possible casting for a young Robert Baratheon.

Given House of the Dragon’s penchant for hiring mostly-unknown actors, it’s possible they may be going for lesser-known actors moving forward. Cavill is looking forward to playing Superman again, which also means he will probably be preoccupied for the next few years. Of course, House of the Dragon offers little opportunity for him to appear while it centers on the Dance of the Dragons period.

House of the Dragon has plenty of characters to introduce in season 2, and while Cavill may not be a fit for any of them, he does have a few years to reconsider. Aegon’s Conquest would probably be better served as a movie as well, so his time would not necessarily be as taken up by the constraints of filming a television show. Until then, it seems like Cavill won’t be joining the Game of Thrones universe anytime soon.

House of the Dragon is streaming on HBO Max.
