Netflix’s The Witcher caught tons of viewers off guard when it turned out to be a pretty dang fantastic adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s identically titled book series. Not only that, but it also proved to be a satisfactory experience for those who enjoyed the popular video game series based on the same source material. Regardless of Sapkowski’s thoughts on the Witcher games, there’s no denying that they follow the books rather well, which is probably why Cavill decided they were an ideal way to keep himself fresh for season 2.

The beloved actor who’s taken on roles from Superman to Sherlock Holmes recently spoke to GamesRadar’s Total Film magazine about how he spent some of his time during lockdown, and many of his gamer fans will be delighted at the answer. It turns out he felt the urge to play through the Witcher games again, whether in the interest of brushing up on his character or simply out of boredom. “I decided to put it on the hardest difficulty possible to play, which I’ve done before, and it was really quite stressful! I forgot quite how stressful it was,” Cavill said, adding that lockdown was a prime opportunity to finally revisit the series. “These days I’m not rich in time and so I haven’t unfortunately had too much of a chance to have a go with the games again.”

It may surprise some to know that Cavill is actually a pretty avid gamer, even going so far as to post an Instagram video of himself building a gaming PC, which quickly became a zen experience for many viewers. It turns out he’s been a fan of The Witcher for quite some time, to the point where he actually based his vocal performance on the Netflix series partially on that of Doug Cockle, who voiced Geralt in the Witcher games. But he’s also a fan of the books, and according to the same interview with Total Film, it looks like he wants to implement some details from Sapkowski’s original iterations in future episodes.

“This season, I really wanted to make sure that we represented the book’s Geralt more accurately, and that we saw him speak more,” Cavill continued. “I pushed really, really hard for that.” So it looks like this may mean that those hoping for a more chatty Geralt (particularly when interacting with the ever-popular bard Jaskier) might get their wish in season 2. Hey, it’s better than just devolving into grunts, though that still does sound kind of on-brand for Geralt.

The Witcher season 2 is closer than ever, which is technically just how time works, but it’s actually less than a month away now. So knowing that Cavill put his own little extracurricular “research” in during his downtime is sure to bring the hype up even more. Maybe if fans are lucky, he’ll put out another PC building video too. Nothing wrong with dreaming big.

The Witcher season 2 will premiere on Netflix starting December 17th, 2021.
