Although the knowledge that Dead Island 2 is still in production ought to assuage most fans’ concerns, the development team over at Yager are without a doubt disappointed to have been released from the project. In fact, Timo Ulmann, the Managing Director of Yager Developments, has expressed as much, implying that both of the companies’ ideas for the sequel didn’t sync up properly.
Regarding Deep Silver’s resolution to move forward on the forthcoming undead slaughterfest without the game developer, Ulmann statement is equal parts professional and amicable, as he says:
Although the proclamation is certainly an unfortunate one for Ulmann to make, at least he can take comfort in the fact that Yager can put the full brunt of their energy toward creating Dreadnought, the flight combat simulator they are producing with game publisher Grey Box. On a more positive note, the Managing Director goes on to essentially say that not only will he and his team build Dreadnought to the best of their abilities, but they will also “focus current efforts on . . . new projects.”
Now that Dead Island 2 is officially without a developer, it’s hard not to wonder whether or not the zombie-themed title’s release date will be pushed back even further, for not long ago it was delayed until 2016. Also, what’s even more concerning is that after Deep Silver’s pronouncement regarding the matter, the company hasn’t even hinted at the possibility of another studio taking over the role of development. Needless to say, it’s highly possible that the game could get postponed until 2017 and beyond.
Nevertheless, once the follow-up is available, fans of Dead Island should expect a refinement of gameplay and mechanics, including “never-before-seen” handcrafted weapons, and a “seamless” multiplayer experience for up to eight players. Not to mention, the environment will be even more realistic than the first installment with settings like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and Venice Beach being featured.
Do you think that the rift between Yager and Deep Silver goes beyond more than just creative differences? Additionally, do you think that we’ll ever see Dead Island 2, or is it just another project left dead in the water?
Dead Island 2 is purportedly still in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and will be hopefully be available some time in 2016.
